Review: Maroon 5 “Payphone” (Single)

Artist: Maroon 5

Title: “Payphone”

Score: 3.5/5

Maroon 5 is on the verge of releasing their fourth studio album entitled “Overexposed”. The official release date is June 26, 2012. Adam Levine and the gang debuted their first single off Overexposed on The Voice last night entitled “Payphone”. The single features rapper Wiz Khalifa, who gives a little flavor to the song at the end. The song’s lyrics are typical Maroon 5. It’s about a guy who gives all of his love and affection to a girl and he ends up getting his heart broken. He explains how he used to be so in love with her, then goes on to lash out at her with a couple of explicit words that we don’t need to mention. The curse words are not needed, and I believe it takes away from the song a little, but obviously Adam thought they were needed, and it clearly comes out of anger. The chorus is very catchy, and I can easily see this song staying at the top of the charts for a long time, like “Moves Like Jagger” did. It is pure pop, nothing more, nothing less. With each album release, it seems the band gets farther and farther away from their finest work in Songs About Jane, their first album, and it’s unfortunate. Their newest material has been extremely poppy, with less and less epic guitar riffs and Jane funk. Nonetheless, Payphone is still a cool, catchy little tune perfect for the summer time and it’s something you will want to put on repeat in the car with the windows down.
